Commissions

Students (Service Users) at Start have the chance to apply their skills to commercial, production-line or one-off specialist products from time to time, through public and private commissions. The skills involved in handling an art commission or garden contract are diverse and demanding.

Skills such as responding to a brief, negotiating with a client, meeting a deadline, costing materials, designing for a specific site - these build communication, teamworking, problem-solving and thinking skills that are highly transferable to the world of work.

Some of our students are now renting their own studio spaces as part of their moving on plans, whilst others have been able to progress into voluntary work placements and training as a result of acquiring skills and confidence via commissions.
