Commission for Bolton Hospital Pharmacy

This commission, opened in 1998 at Bolton Hospital, was made by Start’s mosaic studio .
The Pharmacy team approached Start as they felt that their newly built structure in the Hospital foyer was looking somewhat bland.
After consultation with the team a large Pharmacy sign and four mosaic panels with the theme of a Victorian apothecary were created.
Three Start students with excellent technical skills worked alongside Start’s mosaic artist Rachel Cooke on the project which incorporated some unusual materials: Victorian glass bottles, individually cast ceramic pieces and glass nuggets, pieces of chain and gold leaf tiles, together with traditional mosaic materials.
