I work in the Painting Studio, and have really enjoyed taking part in the Crowning Glories project.
I got ideas for my hat design from a couple of trips to view and sketch cacti. I had already decided on the elliptical shape, and so experimented with sketches on variations of the basic oval. At this stage, I found it was more interesting with one end tapering slightly.
I have made the hat from wood as this material just seemed right.
The colour scheme used was a major part of the designing stage. The initial colours were taken from cacti. I laid down flat colours of blue, green and yellow, and applied a gel medium to create texture, which was taken from the spines of cacti. Finally the hat was glazed with purple and green.
I like the end product and it was great seeing it come together from a sketch to a 3D design, which was a first for me. I am now looking forward to seeing other peoples’ designs.
