Media: velvet, wired beads.
Many cacti have flesh of a most tactile nature - smooth, glossy, plump and lush, but this is armed and protected by thorns.
We have used shot velvet to represent the touchable quality; the shape of the hat denotes the round form of cactus plants withtheir myriad ‘babies’. But whereas in reality the prickles of a cactus can be ferocious, we have chosen to show them in a lighthearted way.
The joint nature of the project has encouraged discussion and teamwork, and has been, as one student said, “something to look forward to”. It has promoted confidence not only in sewing expertise, but in the ability to take a word and turn this into an idea and subsequently a finished piece of work.
