I was attracted to the ball cactus species with respect to their dotty, bumpy and highly textured surface. I used this to inspire how I treated the surface of my head piece. The form was taken from the agave plant; I liked the fleshy, elegant leaves and I think this is evident in the final piece. I used to be a florist some years ago, and can’t help thinking that this has been influential too.
I’ve found this project very fulfilling. It’s the first time I’ve worked using conventional design processes, starting with a theme and generating ideas from the theme.
I was petrified to begin with but have really enjoyed the project from start to finish. I had to admit during the project that I had a bit of a pet hate for cacti, but I see them very differently now!
