Crowning Glories - Modelling the Artworks

Modelling the artworks

Model shot of ‘Carnival’

by Irene Clare Garner

We wanted to create a subtle image to compliment the fragile design of this hat. The long golden stems that extend from the crown were similar to the long grasses that grow along the dunes and we positioned the hat so that it was peeping out above the grasses. We used a long exposure to show the movement of the grasses as they blew in the wind and to give a soft texture to the photograph. The hat turned out to be less fragile than we thought: after the first shot the model moved her head to a new position and the hat fell onto her nose causing a bump where it had hit.  Being a true professional, Mary insisted on continuing with the shoot and held an ice-lolly against her nose between shots to take the swelling down.
