2. Knowledge Changes Perception

Looking at Wallis

A student viewing the Wallis painting

Some people’s first impression of the Wallis painting is that it is childish and amateur. Others consider it a skilful, strong work.

When ‘Now, Voyager’ students first saw ‘The Island’, they didn’t know anything about the artist and his techniques. When they found out more, they discovered their new knowledge changed the way they felt about the painting.

“Initially I thought the painting was very simple, almost childlike, but I quite liked it.”

“I wasn't sure what I thought of the painting when I first saw it”

“At first I thought it wasn't what I'd call a ‘proper painting’ like a Titian or a Canaletto.”
