Colour is a key factor in the way we respond to an artwork, expressing meaning, mood and atmosphere. Everyone reacts individually - partly because we all see colours differently, partly because of personal associations with colours.

The students were asked to examine other paintings in the Whitworth’s collection and record elements of their colour schemes. These new colours were applied to their drawings of ‘The Island’, resulting in startlingly fresh interpretations.

Students were encouraged to work in a gestural way with chalk pastels, to produce fast, spontaneous results.
