setting the standards in Arts & Mental Health

Sound stuff

Start, Manchester Art Gallery and the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) are tackling the theme of looking after your health, in a forthcoming show featuring cast hands, interacting with specially made artworks.

Says project coordinator Rachel Cooke: 'The idea of the exhbition is to explore issues to do with what holds us back, and what helps us move forward. Are we held in stasis or do we have the power to take charge of our lives? The exhibition will reflect the tensions in may of our lives between our pasts, and what we hope for in our futures.'

Students at Start visited Manchester Art Gallery (see news story below) during the summer of 2007 to study Juan Munoz's intriguing scultpure 'Blotter Figure: Standing Still' in order to explore these themes. Following the course they developed individual ideas to make into artworks. Artworks will span all the arts media at Start, and will be accompanied by unique soundtracks created by the students together with musicians, and with the support of the RNCM.
