Create Space Booklet - SoundMap

Students at Start in Manchester are encouraged to use their art to explore issues that are important to them, and develop self expression through their work.

The experience of mental illness, the loss - and regaining - of self identity, the public perceptions and misconceptions of mental ill-health - these are just some of the themes addressed by Start students through the various Projects run in the studios here.

Project work gives students a framework in which they can look at issues, and develop an artistic response to them. Structured sessions guide students through discussion, experimentation, to the creation of finished artworks, many of which have then been seen in galleries around the north west.

Recent Work

Our recent Project work features the ‘Create Space’ booklet in partnership with the University of Salford, a series of ‘mind-boosting’ activities, showing how practical arts and creativity can protect and promote good mental health. See more about ‘Create Space’ here.
