Autumn Leaves

Autumn in the grounds at High Elms. We are lucky to have many mature trees on site, such as horse chestnuts. This means leaf sweeping is a constant task in autumn. The leaves are raked into piles ready for composting, and are then left to rot down to create leaf mold. Once sufficiently rotted, the leaf mold is worked into the soil.

This helps the structure of the soil. Students who perform these tasks have the chance to learn about the full job from beginning to end by reading more about composting and soil structure. This adds complexity, interest and variety to otherwise repetitious tasks.
